Bräucker, R., Machemer, H. (1999): Drop Facilities are useful tools of microgravity research in Ciliates

From the beginning of evolution, life on earth has been influenced by gravity. Reactions of organisms to the gravitational pull can be documented in all systems so far investigated. Gravireactions of species from the group of ciliates, such as Paramecium, were observed a hundred years ago. However, the mechanism of graviperception is unknown so far. For control, further investigations in graviperception of ciliates need experiments under microgravity conditions (µg). Drop facilities offer this possibility. This paper gives a short survey of experiments on gravireception in ciliates done by our group using some 120 flights in drop facilities.
